The “Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Bag”
Special Projects:
Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the first lady of France, on her very first official overseas visit, chose to visit one of the sewing co-operatives trained and supported by Township. She was keen to make a connection with local women and arrived looking very low-key and natural to chat to the women and understand our project.
She left with a bag specially designed to commemorate her visit, in the colours that symbolise South Africa and embroidered “Carla, Khayelitsha”. Hers was the first of a limited edition of 421 bags, each numbered, 50 of which were sold amongst the designer names at the exclusive Paris fashion boutique, Collette. Women around the world snapped up most of the rest. All those who bought the Carla bag, did so knowing they were contributing to founding another co-operative that would have a positive impact on the lives of 10 more township women.
